WHAT IS BEEKEEPING?

In nearly all countries of the world bees and their products are not only well known and have wide consumer preference, but provide sustainable livelihoods to many small-scale farmers and other rural and non-rural people. Bees offer a large potential with minimal investments. As an agricultural enterprise beekeeping does not require land ownership or rental, it can be started with equipment and tools that can be sourced locally and in many instances skills and knowledge required for such an enterprise are found within local traditions.

As a business enterprise it offers not only diverse products, for example honey and wax among others, which can be sold in local markets and become an important source of regular income for farm families, but can also provide complementary services, such as crop pollination.

There are 6 products you can sell and make money through beekeeping and they are as follows:?

  • Raw or refined honey:

This is where money is made by selling products from the hives. Of course, when bee-keeping is mentioned, honey and a painful bee sting come to your mind. But, there are more than that in the bee-hive box. Raw honey has a huge demand the world over. The production costs are minimal compared to other farm ventures. It’s the work of the bee to sample nectar plus other ingredients to make honey.

  • Pollen:

Flowers provides nectar. Bees collect and deposit them in the beehive for their own consumption. Equally, people use nectar as a health supplement. The demand is huge but a small amount is acquired from the bee farms. That explains its exorbitant pricing of the commodity.

  • Propolis:

It’s a sticky substance that is used by bees to cover cracks and sanitize the hive. People also use it as a health supplement and for medicinal purposes. It’s much treasured than pollen. A propolis trap is used for harvesting the commodity.

  • Royal jelly:

It’s also called bee milk. These are unique excretion from the glands of worker bees. The substance is rich in protein. Bee larvae feed on the jelly for the first three days of their lives. The larvae chosen to be the future queens eat the jelly throughout their developmental stages so is to the reigning queen, it feeds on the jelly all her lifetime. Even though the jelly is much treasured, bees made very little of it.

  • Beeswax:

It’s quite popular and is used for manufacturing of lip balms and candles. Can fetch a handsome price for the farmer.

  • Bee Venom:

Some people use the venom to treat arthritis although it’s still under study. Bee sting therapy involves a bee stinging an aching area of the body and is used as a traditional method of treatment.
